Amazing youngsters from Torfaen have been rewarded for their bravery and tenacity at a ceremony to name them Kids Local Heroes.

Asda in Cwmbran held the event to find the area's most deserving children for prizes and the chance to be VIPs for the day.

The overall winner was nine-year-old Jack Parry, from Blaenavon, pictured, who was diagnosed with meningitis at the beginning of the year. He battled the severest form of the disease, meningococcal septicaemia, and feared he would lose both his feet as complications set in.

He had to endure an operation to drain blood from the backs of his legs to his feet to save most of his toes.

Sadly, he still lost a couple of toes on each foot and some fingertips, but he remained a fighter throughout, prompting family friend Nick Paine to nominate him.

There were two runners-up - Emma Sorano and Amanda Evans - decided by a panel of judges made up of Torfaen Mayor, Councillor Collette Thomas, schools liaison officer PC Steve Jones, Jan Hill, chairman Asda's Colleagues Circle, and Daryl Griffiths, Colleague Circle member and health and safety champion at the store.

Eleven-year-old Emma, from Oakfield, has suffered with cerebral palsy for several years and uses a wheelchair, having undergone numerous operations to improve her quality of life.

Amanda, just four, from Llanfrechfa, was born with heart problems and also endured two major heart operations.

The Mayor awarded the winner with £40 Asda vouchers and the runners-up with £20 vouchers and all were given a tour of the store and free Asda goodies.

She said: "It was an honour to be associated with Kids Local Heroes. This was the hardest thing I have ever had to judge. The children are all winners."
