AN ANNUAL charity football match was set up in memory of two men killed in a valleys car crash.

Abertillery man Michael Henry Davies, 54, and Edward Thomas Ralph, 65, from Crickhowell, died on July 19 when their cars collided on the Garnlydan junction on the Heads of the Valleys Road.

On Saturday Garnlydan Football Club joined a team from Continental Teves, where Mr Davies worked, for a football match in memory of the two men. The match, on Garnlydan Football Pitch, was such a success organisers are now making it an annual event.

Together with donations from Garnlydan residents the match raised more than £1,000, which will be donated to two charities to be chosen by the dead men's families. Before the match there was a two minute silence in memory of the two men.

Norma Ralph, Edward Ralph's widow, said she was touched by the community's support. She said: "It was very dignified and considerate. The day went very well and it was nice to be surrounded by Ted's friends.

"I am very pleased that Ted hasn't been forgotten."

One of the organisers, Keith Andrews, joint coach of Garnlydan Football Club, said: "The lads wanted to do something positive to remember them. I knew them both, I used to work with Mike, so I was keen to get involved.

"It was a big success. We all shared our memories and made new friends. Now we are hoping to get a cup made and make it an annual event."

Mrs Ralph is campaigning to have the junction where her husband died altered. Traffic turning right must cross two lanes of fast moving traffic.

Last week she wrote to Rhodri Morgan asking him to step in and help change the junction.
