NEWPORT AM John Griffiths is just one of those who will be getting on their bikes to take part in a mass participation cycling event being held in Newport on August 21.

A keen cyclist, he will be joining those enthusiasts tackling one of the three BikeWales routes which all start and finish at the Celtic Manor Resort.

"I think it is really important to get active because people in Wales are not active enough," said Mr Griffiths, as he got ready to set off on a ride to Swansea. "Cycling is a good way to get fit but it is also enjoyable and fun." The event takes place during an exciting weekend of cycling at the Celtic Manor Resort.

On Saturday, August 20 some of the world's top riders will take part in the UCI World Cup, Grand Prix of Wales - the first time the event has taken place in the UK.

BikeWales is supported by Health Challenge Wales, and offers three different routes and distances. The 19-mile bronze route is for those who want to have a go at longer distance riding while the silver and gold routes, at 51 miles and 103 miles respectively, are for more experienced cyclists.

A family-friendly route was recently added and this "easy-style" option is set entirely in the grounds of the Celtic Manor.Drink stations, mechanical support and first aid provision will be provided on each route and every finisher will receive a certificate. Entry costs £10. For more information visit www.bikewales.org or contact 01372 464666.
