Craig Watson is back in the gym and on the road to full fitness following his horror crash in front of home fans three months ago.

Australian Watson, who celebrated his 29th birthday at the weekend, had his right ankle rebuilt, including a hip bone graft, and has stepped up his gymnasium work after having the construction on his leg, resembling a small oil rig, removed just over a week ago.

Watson, after the crash, had a five to six hour operation and everything is working out well for him. He said: "All the support on the ankle has been removed which means I could start physiotherapy and when that happens you think you are well on the road to recovery.

"Everything feels good and the last X-rays which were taken have shown the ankle looking excellent. The surgeon (Kartik Hariharan) is really impressed - he thinks it looks perfect.

"I have started to walk a little bit, slowly getting both strength and movement back into the ankle. I have a lot of movement and I can walk a reasonable amount."

"Once I knew that the bones had healed really well and looked perfect it was a big relief and when they took the fixator off my leg it was even better.

"I am getting more and more movement back every day and more and more strength. In a couple of weeks or so I will be as fit as a fiddle."

But that doesn't add up to a dramatic return for Watson who, quite a while ago, wrote off this season - and that hasn't changed.

He added: "There is no real rush, although I think I will be fit by the first week in September, but by then the Wasps' season will have finished."

But there may be time - if the invitation(s) come along - for Watson to appear in one or two Open meetings, otherwise his track return will be in his native Oz when he goes home for a couple of months in the winter.

Meanwhile, the Wasps ride the return of their Premier League meeting with King's Lynn at the Norfolk Arena tonight.
