A VICAR of Dibley moment came to an ancient Valleys church as parishioners gave thanks for their animal friends.

In scenes reminiscent of the TV episode in which Geraldine played by Dawn French opened the portals of Dibley's church to the furred and feathered companions of parishioners, canine howls and human voices intermingled in a rendition of All Things Bright and Beautiful during the special pet blessing at St Tudor's Church in Mynyddislwyn near Pontllanfraith.

"Animals are very important to us, whether they are pets or working animals, and they are as much a part of God's creation as we are," said Reverend Ashley Hunt, who first floated the idea of a service for the animals last year.

The 55-year-old father of two lead the service with his collie Sebastian by his side, while more than a dozen canines from lap dogs to Alsatians made their distinctive vocal contributions.

Mr Hunt said he had searched long and hard for hymns with an animal theme.

They are not all that numerous despite the importance of animals to the Christian story - the animals in the manger at Christ's birth and the donkey that bore him into Jerusalem.

"All Things Bright and Beautiful is one that always goes down well with worshippers."

Prayers were offered and each dog was blessed, the congregation having expressed contrition for man's cruelty towards animals.

"Our pets are loyal and loving, and that means a lot," Mr Hunt said. "They are content to be what they are and some of that rubs off and helps us humans to find contentment."

Anita Jones, 70, from Penmaen agreed. She came along with her two-year-old German Shepherd George.

She said: "This is a wonderful idea - it gives George a chance to make some friends."

Bowls of water for canine parishioners and tea and cakes for the humans followed the followed the service as Mr Hunt took the opportunity to bless some sheep in a field next to the church.

Cheryl Hood of Park Street, Crosskeys said: "The service was a marvellous way for the Church to connect.

"The way to a British person's heart is through their dog."
