THE man whose death remains a mystery to police was laid to rest yesterday, five weeks after he was found fatally injured on the M4.

It was revealed during the service for Constandinos Jones that some of his organs had been donated.

More than 200 mourners packed St John's Church in Maindee to pay their last respects.

Mr Jones, known as Costas, was found beside the M4 on August 5. He died in hospital six days later.

Detectives are treating his death as suspicious. They are still trying to discover whether the 23-year-old was pushed or fell out of a car.

During the hour-long Greek orthodox service - believed to be the first at the church for 50 years - Mr Jones' uncle, Michael, paid tribute, describing his nephew's selfless nature which he said was shown by the organ donation.

"From these tragic circumstances new hope for life arose when Costas' family considered his wish for his kidneys to be donated," he said.

"His kidneys were donated and the family can take comfort from the fact that part of Costas is still alive and will continue to help people." Michael described his nephew's love of water skiing, and how he enjoyed swimming in the River Wye and at Symonds Yat as well as going on holiday with his family.

"He was always thinking about other people not himself," said Michael. "He was a very popular young man. From looking around today I can see that he had a good rapport and was well liked by all age groups."

Michael thanked staff at the Royal Gwent Hospital and the University Hospital Wales for caring for his nephew before he died.

Following the service, which was taken by Father Archm Theophanis, cakes and bags of sugar almonds, with a photo of Mr Jones attached, were handed to the congregation.

Mr Jones, of Maindee, was drinking in the city centre and had visited the Walkabout Bar in Bridge Street before he was found on the westbound hard shoulder near the Malpas intersection of the motorway at 12.45am with serious head injuries.

A man in his 40s arrested in connection with the incident was later released on police bail.
