WALES coach Mike Ruddock (pictured) who took his team to a momentous rugby Grand Slam yesterday received another accolade.

He was awarded an honorary fellowship at the University of Wales, Newport, to mark his outstanding achievements.

Speaking after the graduation ceremony at the Caerleon campus, Mr Ruddock, of Blaina, said: "I am very proud of the Welsh team and their achievements which have allowed me to be in a position to be nominated for an honorary fellowship.

"The award is as much for the team as for me.

"As a Gwent man I'm particularly delighted and honoured to accept this award."

Mr Ruddock was given a warm reception by graduates and their families, who chatted with him and had autographs signed.

His speech compared rugby skills to those of graduates in gaining qualifications.

He said: "I congratulated the graduates on getting the results they wanted which will stand them in good stead. I just shared some of my thoughts about getting through life and the lessons you learn."

He said it was great to see the graduates getting recognised for their hard work and being so well supported by their families.

Helen Beddow, head of marketing services at the campus, said: "Mike is a shining example to the students. It's wonderful for the university."

Actor Victor Spinetti, who hails from Ebbw Vale, will be made an honorary fellow at the university today with former principal lecturer at the university Lynette Harries.
