FUEL protesters will bring chaos to Gwent this Friday with an M4 protest against rising petrol prices.

The South Wales Hauliers association made the decision after a meeting last week.

They want the levels of tax on petrol cut, saying the amount British drivers are forced to pay is unfair.

The protest is set to arrive in the Newport area at about 10am, after starting at 7am in Cross Hands, West Wales.

The 20mph rolling blockade will get to Magor Services at around 11am before turning around and heading back to Cross Hands on the westbound carriageway.

The protest comes as fuel prices in parts of South Wales top £1 a litre. And organisers have predicted that drivers will be paying up to £1.50 a litre in six months time.

Mike Greene, of the South Wales Hauliers Association, said: "We estimate we'll be in the Newport area at around 10am, but it depends what happens.

"We did this five years ago and now we're back again - and it's the same problem. We pay too much tax compared to the rest of Europe."

When the fuel protesters return to Cross Hands, a show of hands will be taken on whether or not they will set up blockades at oil refineries.

If the voters agree the blockades will be set up that evening.

Mr Greene added he thought they had the support of the public, saying everyone was suffering from higher petrol prices.

He said: "There were a few members of the public at our meeting and I think we do have support from them.

"If the government wants action, people are prepared to do whatever it takes. We just can't keep going like this."
