MORE than 100 jobs are being axed at a supermarket distribution depot in Chepstow.

Workers at the Asda depot, near the M4, have been waiting since November to find out about their futures after the announcement of imminent cutbacks.

A three-month consultation was carried out and employees faced a tense wait to see who out of the 200 staff at the depot would keep their jobs. Workers were called in for one-to-one meetings with managers at the end of last week and told who was being laid off.

Jason Jordan, 33, is one of 146 workers to lose their jobs. Mr Jordan, of Bettws, Newport, who has worked for the company for two years, knew his position was at risk.

He said: "I knew redundancy was a possibility, but I didn't know until my shift last Sunday night that I would be going.

"It was a real shock. I have a wife and three young children to support and the job market is really tight. It has been devastating."

Mr Jordan says a points system, based on factors like attendance and the number of sick days taken, was used to calculate who would go and who would stay.

A spokesman for Asda said that of the 146 redundancies, 75 were voluntary, adding: "Employees were informed last week between Sunday and Thursday, after the consultation period ended on February 18."
