WALES boss John Toshack was full of praise for experienced goalkeeper Paul Jones after the stopper guided his young charges to a clean sheet.

Jones pulled off a string of fine saves to frustrate the Paraguayan attack before being replaced by Lewis Price in the second half.

And Toshack revealed that it was the QPR keeper's experience combined with a youthful backline that led to him being given the nod over Price for the number one jersey.

Toshack said: "Paul did very well - I think I will need to look for a new goalkeeping coach! He's our only keeper who has played regularly and bearing in mind we had a young defence out there we thought we'd use Paul.

"We used Lewis in Cyprus, and he did very well, but he's only played once in the last three months."

Toshack was pleased with the performance of Lewis Nyatanga who slotted into a back three alongside Gwent pair Danny Gabbidon and James Collins to become Wales' youngest international.

He said: "One of the reasons we played Paul Jones was because of that (the inexperience) - you can't put them all in at the start. But Nyatanga didn't seem phased at all and took the game in his stride. I thought he did very well, he's another one for us and we want to slowly put them in so they have got to get to know each other.

"Overall some things pleased us while other things we know we need to work on a bit harder. We started off under the cosh against a very good, compact side who are comfortable on the ball and it took us a while to get into the game.

"We have a few players who aren't playing regularly and the pace of the game was a bit much for young Collins and Fletcher (both lacking in first team football), but as the game went on they came into it."

Paraguay were pleased with the run out, despite a changed Welsh formation denying them the chance to play against a system similar to World Cup opponents England.

Head coach Anibal Ruiz said: "It was a very rewarding game for us.

"For the first 25 minutes we could utilise the midfield well, Barreto co-ordinated the attack very well - we played a constant game in that sense.

"To put the game into perspective I think we played well and the player of the game was the Wales goalkeeper who made some excellent saves."
