AN ANIMAL carer is still looking for a new home for a tortured dog found abandoned in the Newport area.

Antony Urrutie, who runs Kora Kyi animal welfare group in Cardiff Road, Newport, said people were interested in re-homing Duncan the basset hound.

But he said he wanted to be 100 per cent sure about the offers before letting him go.

As reported in the Argus last week, Mr Urrutie found the dog in agony on the side of the road in the St Brides area last Sunday.

Duncan had suffered a dozen cigarette burns to his nose, ears and legs, cuts to his back and heavy bruising.

Mr Urrutie, who reported the cruelty to Gwent Police, believes the animal had also been doused in petrol and set alight.

A spokesman for the RSPCA said it was a case of "extreme cruelty". But Duncan is now recovering. Mr Urrutie said: "He's healing well and will make a lovely dog for somebody."
