A GWENT businessman says the Red Cross is threatening to take him to court over his company logo.

Dean Cubitt, owner of The Window Doctor in Cwmbran, uses red crosses on a white background and for six years had no problems.

But about two years ago the charity wrote to him claiming he was breaching the 1945 Geneva Convention Act by using them.

Mr Cubitt, who repairs double glazing and employs two people on a part-time basis, said he had never been mistaken for the Red Cross.

He tried to resolve the problem by suggesting about 20 different designs, even ones including red circles and arrows, but each was rejected by the Red Cross.

"I just gave up in the end," he said. "They don't want anything red on a white background."

Mr Cubitt said: "I don't have the money to fight a case.

"They are a charity organisation which gets millions of pounds worth of donations and I have got to work for a living."

A Red Cross spokeswoman said the organisation wrote to Mr Cubitt in their role of preserving the integrity of their emblem, which is protected under law.

She said: "We would hope to receive his co-operation in reaching a mutually agreeable resolution to the matter.

"Unauthorised use or misuse of the emblem or of similar designs is a prima facie breach of the criminal law. The British Red Cross itself is only able to use the emblem within specified limits."
