INVESTIGATIONS into the death of a Gwent teenager collapsed because of a lack of evidence.

The four men arrested over the murder of 17-year-old Rhys Davies from Tredegar were released without charge and police said they are not looking for anyone else.

Mr Davies, of Walter Conway Avenue on the Cefn Golau estate, died of head injuries on February 14 after an assault at around 6.40pm in Cardiff the night before.

Mr Davies had been out shopping with a friend when it is believed they became involved in an argument with some passers-by near the Ladbrokes Shop in St Mary Street while making their way back to the bus station.

DI Dave Runnalls of South Wales Police Major Crime Team said the men, who were on bail, have been released without charge following a decision by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

He said they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the investigation.

A CPS spokesman said it was unlikely it would be able to sustain a prosecution against any of the four men.

He said the CPS is under a duty to review all cases referred to it by the police according to the code for crown prosecutors.

This requires that for a case to go ahead, there must be a realistic prospect of conviction.

The spokesman said they took on board advice from experienced Queen’s Counsel.

He said: “Our conclusion is that, as a result of a number of complicating factors in this case, there is no realistic prospect of a conviction. As such we will not be proceeding with the case.”

Police officers and members of the CPS met with Mr Davies’ family to explain this decision.
