THREE witnesses could hold key information about the £10,000 robbery of a security guard outside Newport’s Tesco Extra store, police say.

The Argus reported yesterday how more than £10,000 was taken during the robbery on Friday night when a security guard delivering money to the store on Cardiff Road was approached by a man wearing dark clothing and white trainers at around 7.45pm.

The guard was pushed to the ground and a box containing money which he was carrying was taken from him.

The security guard, who was believed to be working for Group 4 Securicor, was shaken but unhurt following the incident.

It is believed the robber had two or possibly three accomplices and that they left the scene in a dark, possibly blue, four-door car. On leaving the Harlech Retail Park, they drove towards the Tredegar Park roundabout.

Police now want to trace three people who were in the area at the time and might hold valuable information.

They want to speak to a woman who told the security guard she had seen the offenders run off and throw the cash box to the side of the store which was later recovered . The woman is described as white with dark hair, aged between 25 and 30 years old and possibly wearing a white top.

They also want to trace a man who may have been using the cash machine at the store before leaving in a maroon coloured Ford Escort.

He is described as aged between 60 and 70 years old, of a slight build, between 5 ft 7 and 5 ft 8 and balding with grey hair at the sides.

The third person police are seeking to trace is believed to be a man of Chinese appearance and was sat on a box of store catalogues near the entrance to the store. He was wearing silver-rimmed glasses and it is believed he had a child with him.

Any witnesses should contact Gwent Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
