WORK is getting underway on a supermarket in Abergavenny which will bring 20 new jobs to the town.
Low-cost foodstore Aldi is building a shop opposite the bus station on the site of the former Renault garage on Monmouth Road and the Whittal-Williams repairs workshop and yard next door.
Demolition work on the garage is due to be finished before the end of the year and it is hoped construction of the new store can start shortly afterwards with a view to have the shop ready to open by next summer.
The 20 new jobs will all be full-time positions.
There will be 73 parking spaces for customers and the store will carry a range of 800 items, but they will not sell newspapers or pharmacy items.
Planning permission for the store was unanimously granted by the council’s planning committee in December 2008.
Monmouthshire council's head of planning, George Ashworth told the Argus after permission was granted that Aldi has offered to contribute £10,000 towards traffic improvement works, which could include areas such as the bus station.
