THE sister of a Newport man, who died two days after being attacked, said she is “disgusted” that no one has ever been brought to justice.

John Sully died on April 7 last year from pneumonia after being beaten up at his sister Jacqueline Howard's home on Albany Road.

Although a inquest found that his death was not linked to the attack, Ms Howard, 51, cannot believe that no charges were ever brought against the men that put her brother in hospital with fractured ribs and swelling on the brain.

Police said they sought advice from the Crown Prosecution Service on the assault who said there was not enough evidence to prosecute. A police spokeswoman said they carried out a thorough investigation.

A spokesman for the Crown Prosecution Service said a lawyer had examined all the evidence thoroughly in relation to the assault charge, but concluded that there was not a realistic prospect of conviction.

51-year-old Ms Howard explained that Mr Sully, of Forge Close, Caerleon, had been staying with Ms Howard since November 2007 after separating from his wife.

Ms Howard explained that on the night he was attacked, five people came to her house to see her brother.

Ms Howard said she and her brother were sitting with them in her living room on April 7 and that when she came back downstairs from the toilet found her brother and two members of the group had gone.

She said she then heard a scuffle and opened her front door to find her brother standing in the doorway covered in blood and bruises.

Ms Howard said her brother, who worked as a service manager at Ford in Cwmbran, would not let her phone for an ambulance.

He eventually went to hospital at 2.45pm later that day but he left around two hours later and returned to his sister’s house.

He then collapsed and ambulance was called, but Mr Sully died at the Royal Gwent Hospital at around 5pm the next day.

Ms Howard said her brother suffered 58 bruises to his body, fractured ribs and swelling of the brain.

Gwent Police launched a murder investigation and arrested five people, but no one was ever charged.

Ms Howard said there was no reason why he was attacked and said it was completely unprovoked.

“As far as the police and CID are concerned, he’s just a number and is brushed under the carpet," she said.
