THE Free Press would like to clarify, once again, that to our knowledge Mardy AFC and Abergavenny Thursdays will not be merging.
Our sports desk was approached by a member of the public - a man from neither club - several weeks ago simply suggesting that a merger of Mardy and Thursdays would be a means of bringing Welsh League football back to Abergavenny.
We then approached representatives of the two clubs, with neither expressing an interest in the idea.
Our story last week, incorrectly headlined 'Merger talk on table', was based on comments made by Abergavenny Thursdays' committee chairman Stephen Head. He said although the committee would not dismiss such an idea out of hand, they did not seek a merger and had not been approached.
And Mardy AFC chairman Gareth Povey added last week: "Just to clarify the situation regarding the merger of Abergavenny Thursdays and Mardy, this has not been discussed and will never happen."
