JASON Jones-Hughes was left frustrated today as he bids to make his first Newport appearance in over a year.

The former Wales centre has been suffering from a major knee injury which required a complete re-construction.

He was ready to put on a Newport jersey for the first time since the Connacht game over a year ago when named in the Newport United side to face Worcester at Rodney Parade tonight.

However, the match is not going ahead as the English National League Division One side cried off this morning.

They have suffered a series of injuries over the weekend and could not raise a side.

Jones-Hughes wanted to play badly and, before his chance was scuppered, he said: Its been a long time, but Ive stayed positive and its good to be back.

Also fit again is loose-head prop Ceri Jones, recovered from the hairline fracture of the cheekbone and broken nose inflicted in the Glasgow match.

And more good news from the weekend is that neither full-back Matt Pini nor centre Andy Marinos, injured during Newports 27-25 defeat to Cardiff on Saturday, is as serious as first feared.

Pini damaged a shoulder and Marinos suffered a head injury and both had to be replaced in the second-half against the Blue and Blacks.

But, in any case, they could be rested for Friday nights tough task against Celtic League champions Leinster in Dublin, even if it is meaningless for Newport in terms of qualification for the knockout phases of the competition.

* Ebbw Vale won the first Gwent derby of the Wales Under-21s Premier Division season as they defeated Newport 16-13.

The Steelmen secured their second win of the season with outside-half Richard Jenkins becoming the hero for them by landing a hat-trick of penalties and converting a penalty try.

Flankers Sion Lang and Scott Davies were the pick of the forwards.
