A DRIVER was critically injured in a crash on a Gwent road branded "dangerous" by residents.

The accident happened on the B4248 Brynmawr to Blaenavon Road, near the Racehorse pub, at about 8pm on Sunday.

Police say a 35-year-old local man was seriously injured when the Peugeot car he was driving left the road. No other vehicle was involved.

He was taken to Nevill Hall Hospital, in Aberg-avenny, where he was today in a "critical" condition.

The accident comes months after the death of 24-year-old council worker Ann-Marie Davies in an accident on the same stretch of road.

Blaenavon councillor Tom Huish said: "It has always been a dangerous road. This is the second serious accident in months. There is a desperate need for improvements along the road. Better lighting around the bends and signage would help."

Ron Roach, landlord of the Racehorse, also called for better lighting on bends near his pub.

"Something has got to be done," he said.

Earlier this month an inquest in Newport heard Ann-Marie Davies was driving a Vauxhall Astra from Brynmawr to Blaenavon on November 20 last year when for an unknown reason she lost control of the car.

As she passed motorist James Windsor Short, who was travelling in a Renault Clio in the opposite direction, she spun and crashed into him, dying instantly.

Miss Davies, of Brynmawr, who worked in the planning department of Blaenau Gwent council, was pronounced dead at the scene, of multiple injuries, the inquest was told.

A police investigation could find nothing wrong with either of the cars and officers told the inquest conditions at the time of the crash, around 5.50pm, were good.

The cause of the accident remains a mystery and a verdict of accidental death was recorded.
