A NEWPORT parody of a Jay Z hit, which has taken YouTube by storm with more than 400,000 hits after it was revealed in yesterday's Argus, could now be released as a single.

Alex Warren, 24, and Terema Wainwright, 25, who star as Jay Z and Alicia Keys’ welsh counterparts in spoof music video Newport (Ymerodraeth State of Mind), say they would love to release the song if the opportunity arose.

Mr Warren said the group who put the video together, including director MJ Delany, 24, will meet to discuss to decide whether they will seek permission from the record company who released the song.

He said: “It would be amazing. It’s been completely nuts since yesterday.

“I was recognised on the tube earlier. A couple of boys were looking at me and when I got off they shouted ‘Newport’.”

The London actors, who have been inundated with requests for TV and newspaper interviews, said they have been overwhelmed by its overnight success after being posted on Monday.

The pair were interviewed yesterday to appear on ITV’s Wales Tonight programme last night and have also been contacted by The Metro and The Sun newspapers and BBC Radio One, who want to play it on air. It was also played on Newport City Radio last night.

Mr Warren has even been approached by a rapper who produced songs for the film Kidulthood for a potential collaboration.

The video was YouTube’s most watched video last night and continues to attract celebrity followers.

Miss Wainwright said she was thrilled Welsh comedian Rob Brydon had praised it: “That was my favourite. He is such a well respected actor and comedian and he’s Welsh so it was amazing,” she said.
