TWENTY-FIVE people with mental illness and learning disabilities face a bleak future after a decision to close an Abergavenny care home.

Residents at Triley Court, Pantygelli, face being moved out of the county in October, as Monmouthshire council has no provision for people with mental illnesses.

Triley Court, which is run by Craegmoor Healthcare, has 38 single and five shared rooms and is home to young adults with long-term mental illness and learning disabilities.

Residents are cared for by two qualified nurses and a team of care assistants.

A Craegmoor Healthcare spokeswoman said the home is no longer appropriate for the residents and they are working with families to find new homes for the residents and is helping staff find new jobs She added: "We did not take this decision lightly and our top priority is always the people we support, their families and our dedicated staff."

Julie Boothroyd, Monmouthshire council's group manager for adult services said they are working with neighbouring councils to find new homes.

Mardy councillor John Prosser said his main concern is for residents.

He understands 11 residents are from Monmouthshire and the rest from around Gwent.

"It is sad to lose such a facility but our duty now is to find alternative accommodation," he added.

The decision comes two months after the privately-run Saxonbury Nursing Home in Lansdown Road, Abergavenny closed and 23 residents had to be re-homed due to ‘unforeseen circumstances’. This followed concerns raised by the Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales (CSSIW) about care practices.

Craegmoor Healthcare refused to comment when the Argus asked who owns the home and the reason behind the closure.

Triley Court will close on October 20.
