NEWPORT shoppers have had the chance to unleash their wild side this week, by dressing up as an animal and auditioning for a place in a cabaret show as part of The Big Splash festival.

Performing artists from animal show Zig Zag Zoo have been on hand in the city centre's old Co-Op bank, next to the Kingsway centre, looking for people with the 'Z factor'.

Those old and young have taken great delight in finding an animal outfit in the dressing-up box, before dancing, singing, or performing acrobatics in front of the judges.

Six professional actors will take to the stage over the Bank Holiday weekend at The Riverfront Theatre, accompanied by locals who have impressed staff at the auditions venue.

Shows on Saturday, Sunday and Monday evening, at 8pm, will see them battle it out to become the top act.

A troupe of four penguins with a breakdance routine won the first 'Z factor' show in Bristol, which took place earlier this year.

Dungcan the Dung Beetle, who had never performed on stage before, was runner-up.

"It's more of a comedy show than a talent show and as everyone has to dress as an animal, even the most skilled performers are in disguise- it's a great leveller," Naomi Smyth of organisers Invisible Circus said.
