A NEWBRIDGE woman says being told she suffers from the heart condition which killed her mother made her realise she had to start living her dreams.

Kristy Silburn, 24, of Pantside had her world turned upside down in July 2007 when her mother Susan, 50, died unexpectedly from undiagnosed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a condition where the heart muscle becomes thickened.

Unaware of the illness, it was only when Miss Silburn went to wake her mother up one morning that she discovered the tragic death.

To further add to the pain, Miss Silburn was told the condition was hereditary and that she too was suffering from the illness which makes it difficult for the heart to pump blood out.

Although Miss Silburn doesn’t suffer from any symptoms at the moment, they can include breathlessness, chest pain and palpitations.

She has also had to make some adjustments to her lifestyle including reducing her gym visits from seven times to three times a week to ensure she does not put too much pressure on her heart.

She also undergoes heart scans every few months and has annual check -ups.

She said: “Losing my mother was hard enough so to then be told I had to deal with the illness as well was quite a shock.

“It is always on the back of my mind but I have also realised that life is too short.”

This led to Miss Silburn using her inheritance and savings to set up Your Moment wedding planning service, Victoria Terrace, Newbridge, which will have been running for two years in October.

The business helps organise wedding days and provides additional features such as chair covers, chocolate fountains and centrepieces.

Your Moment now caters for up to three weddings every weekend and July saw them provide for around 20 weddings alone.

So far, Miss Silburn has been running the business singlehandedly but hopes to employ more staff in the near future.

She said: “I hope Mum is proud of what I have achieved.”

Miss Silburn will be at a wedding fair at Caerphilly leisure centre on September 12 from 12pm until 4pm.
