AN attempt to protect an area of African rainforest the size of Wales will be launched by Prince Charles today.

Supporters of the campaign will team up with conservation projects in Africa in an effort to save two million hectares of tropical forest.

The Prince will launch the Size of Wales initiative at the National Botanic Garden of Wales, Llanarthne, Carmarthenshire, in the latest stop on a week-long tour to promote environmental causes around Britain.

Size of Wales project manager Hannah Scrase said an area the size of Wales is often used to measure the rate of forest destruction.

"This project turns the negative use of our nation's size on its head, and encourages people to help protect an area of rainforest equivalent to the size of Wales,’’ she said.

"This is the first country in the world to mobilise such a unique national response to the problem of forest destruction and climate change.

"By protecting two million hectares of rainforest, we hope to make lasting links with forest projects in Africa.’’ First Minister Carwyn Jones said: "I am delighted to see that Wales is leading the way in the fight against forest destruction and climate change.

"This vitally important work builds on the strong links we have already made through our Wales for Africa scheme.’’
