HUNDREDS turned out to support amateur artists in Newport at the weekend at a festival aimed at encouraging people to rediscover the city’s parks.
Jewellers, painters, wood turners, glass blowers and performance artists turned out to showcase their work at the Belle Vue Park event organised by Friends of Newport Ornamental Parks (FNOP) and part-funded by the Newport Festival 2010.
Musicians and dancers provided entertainment at the Victorian bandstand and exhibitions, which could not be housed in the park’s century-old Tea House as planned because of an arson attack, were re-homed in marquees.
Vice chairman of the FNOP, Steve Taylor, said organisers were pleased with the turnout, which saw more than 1,000 visitors on Saturday and said he hoped to continue the event next year.
