STUDENTS from Newport's University got the chance to show off their latest designs to some of the wives and girlfriends of the Ryder Cup players yesterday.

The women judged the designs of 15 students and recent graduates at a special fashion show held in the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff Bay yesterday.

It included one collection inspired by the Ryder Cup itself, with a glamorous take on golf wear.

Professional and student models were joined by Wales' only female pro-golfer Rhian Wyn Thomas to show off the designs, all developed by Newport's fashion students.

But in the end the wives and girlfriends gave top scores to Michelle McGrath, who graduated from Newport with a degree in fashion design this summer.

Michelle's prize will see her undertake work experience with fashion designer Paul Costelloe.

Prizes to Ms McGrath, runner-up Rachel Taylor and third place designer Geraint Donovan-Bowen were presented by Gaynor Montgomerie and Lisa Pavin, the wives of the Ryder Cup captains.

The winning designer, who is in the process of launching her own label called MVM, said: "When you begin studying, you don't expect opportunities like this to come your way, but this was just brilliant."
