JURY members in the trial of a man accused of murdering his wife, heard the victim's twin initially believed her sister had killed herself.

Aleksandra Lipska was found dead in the flat she shared with her husband, Daniel Lipski, in Dewstow Street, Newport, in the early hours of May 13, 2008.

The 27 year old, who was also known as Ola in her native Poland and Alex once she moved to Newport in 2007, suffered a stab wound to the chest, which punctured her lung and heart.

Lipski, 28, who now lives in The Hawthorns, Cardiff, is on trial at Cardiff Crown Court accused of her murder.

Continuing her evidence yesterday Mrs Lipska's twin sister, Agnieska Kaczmarska, said her sister was her own "worst enemy" when she was drinking.

Ms Kaczmarska said that when she heard her sister was dying, she took an overdose of tablets.

She said: "I didn't really want to kill myself it was just my reaction to hearing Alex was dying. We went back to Dewstow Street and I was distraught trying to get in to see Alex. I was screaming and shouting and hit my head against the wall a few times deliberately. I was distraught."

Ms Kaczmarska was initially arrested on suspicion of Mrs Lipska's murder and later released without charge, but during interviews with police she said she did not believe Lipski would harm his wife.

She told police her sister had got to the point where she had "had enough of everything" and thought she may have stabbed herself as a "cry for help."

In interview, Ms Kaczmarska said: "Alex was crying out for help. She didn't like the way the relationship was going, with Daniel's jealousy. She was very different towards the end. Despite any jealousy, I thought Daniel was incapable of harming her.

"He loved her, absolutely loved her, but unfortunately she was unmanageable and if she carried on like that he would have left her. I think they both loved each other, but because of their issues, the marriage was doomed."
