MORE than 4,000 visitors enjoyed Chepstow's annual agricultural show - double the number who attended last year.

The show already beat last year's performance within an hour of opening its gates as visitors flooded into Broadwell Farm, Crick.

Last year's event was a wash-out, as the rain poured and ruined most of the field.

But on Saturday the sun was shining and mums, dads, grandparents and children enjoyed what was on offer.

The show started as a simple competition more than 150 years ago and now boasts dozens of stands from Monmouthshire County Council recycling, the SARA rescue team, the Wildlife Trust, Greyhound Rescue to a glider simulator by the British Gliding Association.

There were giant bouncy castles, rides, clowns and games for the children and a lesson in caring for the environment.

The cattle display, horse and pony classes and championship was watched by hundreds and the Rockwood Display Dogs were so popular they performed twice.

David and Lynne Prosser from Mynydd Bach, near Shirenewton, go the to show every year.

"We are regular visitors and this year has been smashing," said Mrs Prosser.

"The dog show was absolutely brilliant and it the whole show was much better than last year, there are thousands of people here enjoying the stalls and shows."
