MORE than 1,500 people turned out help kick-off Newport Gwent Dragons' season.
Fans of all ages made their way to Rodney Parade on Sunday afternoon for a family fun day and, despite the dull weather, enjoyed music, stalls and displays, as well as an It's a Knockout contest featuring a Dragons team.
There was also a tag-rugby tournament for youngsters aged eight to 10 and families got the chance to mingle with and meet their heroes, who were on hand to sign autographs and chat.
Dragons Commercial Director Gethin Jenkins said the annual fun day was a great way to kick-off the season.
"It's nice for families, especially kids, to get the chance to meet the players in a relaxed atmosphere," he said.
All proceeds from the It's a Knockout contest went to Save the Children, with six teams pitting their wits against each other - Newport Gwent Dragons, Newport Rugby, Bisley, Ponthir Construction and Dragon Slayers.
The rest of the money raised from the day will go towards the club's community projects.
"This is a great way to get the fans involved in the club," said Mr Jenkins.
