A NEWPORT man, who has spent the past three years helping to save lives as an ambulance service volunteer, will be honoured at the city council’s Extra Mile Awards.

John Wheat, of Ringland, is a Newport First Responder trained to assist in an emergency before paramedics arrive at the scene of an incident.

Despite working full time he still manages 60 to 80 on call and has attended more than 2,000 calls in the past three years.

Mr Wheat used his CPR skills to attempt to unsuccessfully revive his stepson Ryan, 11, who died in his sleep in September 2008.

Ryan was diagnosed with benign epilepsy and suffered seizures in the months leading up to his death.

But despite his tragic death, Mr Wheat was back responding to calls within weeks.
