The Young Venture Player’s latest production, Just So, opened to a rousing reception from an appreciative audience at the Dolman Theatre.

Full credit must go to director Gordon Collins, musical director Cathy Robins and choreographer, Kath Morgan in disciplining a large cast of mixed ages and ability into a triumph of a musical, full of colour, humour and empathy.

Based on Rudyard Kipling’s short stories, the plot is simple, taking the characters on a journey to find the Limpopo river, and a crab by the name of Pau Amma who has caused a flood, so, threatening the other animals.

The inimitable, Dave Constant, gives a wonderfully laid-back and nurturing performance as the Eldest Magician, allowing the youngsters the full share of the spotlight.

Christopher Harris, the Elephant’s Child and Abigail Rabbitt, Kolokolo Bird, pave the way with two uplifting and inspiring performances, whilst the talented Megan Postle and Toni Lewis bring grace, elegance and infectious enthusiasm to their key roles as the zebra and giraffe.

Not to be out-done, Josie Ash and Charlie Ingles demonstrate their comic timing as the Cooking Stove and Parsee, whilst little Phoebe Rees almost steals the show as Dingo Dog.

In an evening of outstanding performance, James Price’s Jaguar and Luke Hereford’s Jaguar prove a dynamic duo, conveying a strength in musicalty way beyond their years.

Uplifting, colourful and diverse, the perfect tonic for a winter’s eve, don’t miss it.

The production runs until Saturday.
