A NEWPORT tot is using flower power to raise money for those affected by the Japanese tsunami.

Four-year-old Bethan Cole was so moved by pictures of the devastation in Japan that she asked her mum Phae, 36, if she could hold a flower day ‘like poppy day’ to raise money for children effected in the country.

Although shocked at her daughter’s mature understanding of the disaster Mrs Cole agreed and the pair have been busy making flower-shaped badges out of coloured card with safety pins on the back.

Mrs Cole said: “I was stunned and rather proud that someone so young would think to do something like that so I agreed to help her.

“She’s always been caring and she understood that it was a way to raise money.”

The Ysgol Gymraeg Ifor Hael pupil has so far raised £50 from collecting donations in exchange for the badges, which are available in Mrs Cole’s shop, also called Bethan, in Newport Arcade.

And the youngster is so dedicated to the cause she is even considering selling her unwanted toys to raise some extra money.
