NEWPORT’S Shire Hall could be converted into 20 flats.

SK Designs Ltd has applied for listed building consent to change the use of the historic Grade II listed building, in Pentonville, from offices to flats.

The proposed scheme could see the four-storey building converted into 11 one-bedroom apartments and seven two-bedroom flats with a reception area and bicycle storage area.

The former Monmouthshire county council offices were built in 1902, to the designs of the architect William Tanner.

They underwent a substantial extension in 1913 to 1914, adding the top storey to the Shire Hall and adjoining Queen’s Chamber.

In 1998 the hall gained Grade II listed building status in recognition of its historic and architectural qualities was described by conservationists Cadw as an impressively designed Edwardian civic building.

Following a long period of disrepair after the local government reorganisation, it was restored and converted into office suites, but has since been vacant for many years.

A planning application for its change of use, submitted to Newport City Council, states that any internal alterations of the building will retain features identified as having architectural merit, including marble columns in the entrance hall, a fine well stairway, balustrades and arched windows.

The proposed development promises to maintain the architectural integrity of the building, with no planned alterations to the external facade.

The planning report says proposals will ensure that the attractive Shire Hall building’s setting and appearance will be preserved and enhanced.

The application is currently being considered by the city council.
