A REPORT to go before Monmouthshire council’s adults select committee today says the number of people visiting libraries across the county has decreased over the past few years.

This was partly put down to closures during snow conditions at the beginning of 2010, and from last November to February this year, when numbers fell further.

However a review of data collection methods in 2010/11 revealed website visits were being counted rather than unique users accessing the service online, which impacted on the lower figures.

Atotal of 8,869 people visited libraries in 2007/8, compared to 6,901 for 2010/11.

A drop in numbers is also expected at ChepstowLibrary during its refurbishment, but on a positive note, 353 new customers joined Monmouth library since it reopened following improvement works.
