PARENTS and families were invited to attend Thornwell Primary School’s annual open day last Thursday, which included a special display of poems, pictures, and work done by pupils in the aftermath of the recent fire.

The annual open day is usually held to allow parents to see for themselves the work that is done by pupils throughout the academic year. But with the recent calamity impacting on the last term of the year, staff and teachers were keen to show that the children had successfully completed the term’s work topics.

Following the fire that destroyed part of the school during the half-term break in early June, the youngsters were encouraged to express their thoughts and emotions relating to the fire through writing poems, drawing pictures and by discussing the issue in their classrooms. The artwork was proudly displayed around the school corridor during the open day.

Head teacher Linda Davies said: “We hold these open days every year for the parents, but obviously this year we wanted to give them the assurance that we have continued as normal.”
