CHILDREN from Chernobyl in the Ukraine enjoyed a party held in their honour this week as part of their month-long visit to Gwent.

The six children, aged between eight and 12, who are enjoying a holiday funded by the Gwent-based charity Victims of Chernobyl Children’s Fund, tucked into sweets, cakes and enjoyed a bouncy castle at the event at Newport East Community Centre on Wednesday.

They were also given gifts donated by supermarket store Tesco.

Since they arrived in the UK on July 6 they have enjoyed a range of activities including joining Newport mayor Cllr Margaret Cornelious for high tea, have visited Techniquest in Cardiff and visited Bettws fishing pond.

They also visited Malpas Fire Station where they watched firefighters dismantle a car and had a go at using the water hose.

The trip, which is been running for over 20 years, aims to give children who are suffering health problems caused by leaked radiation fun experiences in an unpolluted environment to improve their health and immune system.

This year is the 25th anniversary of the nuclear disaster in which an explosion and fire at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine released large quantities of radioactive contamination into the air.
