A NEW drop-in service is available for ex-servicemen tackling anxiety issues in Torfaen.
Combat Stress welfare officer Eddie Evans said his charity – in conjunction with Torfaen council – is organising monthly sessions for veterans at Pontypool Leisure Centre.
Veterans and their families will be able discuss any problems they may be having with people from the charity, which helps servicemen suffering from post traumatic stress disorder and other anxiety illnesses.
It is understood the drop-in sessions are the first of their kind in Gwent.
“It’s more of a drop in session, so they can discuss their own problems or have a general chat,” said Mr Evans whose charity has established sessions across Wales.
“I will be there from Combat Stress, they have an out reach team and a community psychiatric nurse. If people do have problems that way they can be taken to one side and speak to them.”
Veterans could speak to Mr Evans to make a further appointment or could be advised on seeing their own local mental health team.
Members of the Royal British Legion, who can help with welfare issues, and representatives from the Service Personnel and Veterans Agency will also be at the sessions.
Its planned that members of the community mental health team from the Aneurin Bevan Health Board will attend in future, Mr Evans added.
He said the first session at the end of July attracted 28 veterans from as far afield as Bargoed, with further drop-ins to be potentially organised in Blaenau Gwent later in the year.
Steve Pennells, Royal British Legion volunteer case worker from Beaufort, said he was pleased the sessions have started and that they are planned for Blaenau Gwent as well.
“I believe every county in the country should have an outreach post,” he added.
The group will be meeting at Pontypool Leisure Centre on August 24 from 12pm to 2pm. For more information call Combat Stress on 01952 822757.
