RAIL passengers are to benefit from better access to the platforms at Abergavenny railway station after plans to install lifts and a new footbridge were approved by Monmouthshire Council.
Network Rail says the new footbridge will give passengers with disabilities, luggage or pushchairs better access between the station entrance and platforms, which are currently linked by stairs connecting to a footbridge over the track.
The station opened in 1854 and has Grade II-listed heritage status, but the access does not comply with current legislation and rail standards as passengers who cannot use the stairs have to use a barrow crossing on the railway tracks, which presents a health and safety risk to the railway.
