THIS year’s Monmouth Raft Race raised more than £20,000 for charity.

The Rotary Club of Monmouth, which organises the annual event, said the 2011 race raised a total of £20,455, with £15,341 donated to St David’s Foundation Hospice Care.

The rest of the cash will go to other local charities.

The race, which was sponsored by Michelin-starred The Crown at Whitebrook restaurant, saw 57 varieties of raft take to the river Wye in September.

The Crown sponsored the race for the first time in 2010, when it raised a record-breaking £24,000.

Norman Williams, from the Rotary Club of Monmouth, said: “We’re pleased to report that the 2011 raft race was a huge success. We’re delighted to be able to donate more than £15,000 to St David’s Foundation.”

Kris Broome, from St David’s Foundation, said: “We’d like to thank Monmouth Rotary for organising such a superb event this year.”

The 2012 race will be held on September 2.
