THE comrades of a Newport soldier formed a guard of honour at his wedding on Saturday – just weeks before he returns to Afghanistan.

Sergeant David Haines, who serves with the Welsh Guards, will return to the front line next month for his second tour of Afghanistan.

Joining him on the six-month tour will be fellow Welsh Guard, and the best man at his wedding on Saturday, Paul Liddy.

Ten guardsmen were at the wedding in uniform to give the couple a guard of honour at St Michael and All Angels Church in Mitchel Troy, Monmouth.

Sgt Haines, 26, who has been in the army since he was 16, proposed to Miss Emmanuel in December 2010 and they have been together for around two years.

The couple, who live in Maindee, chose the church because it has a lot of family history for the 25-year-old bride and was the church where her parents renewed their wedding vows.

The couple were also joined at the wedding by Miss Emmanuel’s 21-month-old son, Harrison, and had their reception at Alice Springs Golf Club.

They are hoping to go on honeymoon when Sgt Haines finishes the tour.
