A COMMUNITY centre in Monmouth offered a nursery a lifeline after it said it wants to create a permanent home for group.
Monmouth Community Under 5s Nursery has been in temporary accommodation at the Bridges, Drybridge Park since the council asked the group to leave its home at Overmonnow Learning Centre, Wonastow, in 2010.
Supervisor Sue Weston blamed increases in rent and what she said was an inadequate income from the educational authority for the decision, while the council said it had supported the nursery for a number of years with funding comparable to the country’s local education authority nurseries.
Mrs Weston has met Bridges staff and trustees who run the charitable trust about building new premises for the group on the site.
She said trustees and staff at Bridges would be putting a Lottery bid together to submit to the Big Lottery. Bridges manager Mark Walton said a proposal is due to be submitted to the Big Lottery Fund this week.
“We hope to build an extension, known as Bridges Children’s Centre, which would not only accommodate the nursery but also a creche and other activities.”
