A NEWPORT community centre is hosting Wales’ first ‘garden city cafe’ – bringing the outdoors, indoors.
The volunteer-run cafe is part of the transformation of Somerton’s Hope Centre, which has reopened after being hit by fire in 2010.
Incorporating features such as tree trunk-based tables, plants, and an artificial grass wall, the cafe was designed by a University of Glamorgan student, Nikki Howells, who won a competition through a community transformation project called Design Factor, run by South Walesbased Pinkspiration, which aims to help people go into business or set up a community project.
Somerton residents were on the judging panel, and volunteers worked on the cafe with building industry professionals. The project also attracted a £5,000 lottery grant.
