TO mark the 200th anniversary of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, more than 30 churches across Brecon Beacons National Park and South Wales will take part in the ‘ringing of the bells’ at noon on February 10, recreating the opening ceremony 200 years ago.

A single bell will be rung by Cllr Bob Wellington, leader of Torfaen County Borough Council and Robin Herbert, the greatgreat- grandson of Sir Benjamin Hall – the namesake of Big Ben, the bell of the clock installed in the tower of the Houses of Parliament in 1857.

The opening ceremony will form part of a celebratory event from 11am-2pm at Pontymoile Basin, which is open to the public.

The event will include performances by pupils from various associations and schools, including West Monmouthshire School.
