A NEWPORT man has transcribed old school registers to raise money for local schools.

David Woolven, 69, has transcribed around 20 registers from the former Marsh’s Road School and the former Newport High School.

Around 2,000 entries were made in the admission registers and it took Mr Woolven about two years to complete the project.

Information from registers for Marsh’s Road School included names, addresses, dates of birth and the date children left school.

Log books named excluded children, deceased children and children who had been evacuated during the war.

The registers for the old Newport High School were found in archive rooms at the former Bettws High School which Mr Woolven said had been damaged because of flooding.

The directories, which went up to 1930, listed where pupils went after leaving school.

Mr Woolven put the information into spreadsheets and copied them on to CDs.

Each CD is being sold for £5 with all of the money going to Crindau Primary School’s parents and teachers association for the Marsh’s Road School information and to St Woolos Primary School for the old Newport High School information.

Mr Woolven said the registers have been handed over to the Gwent Records Office.

Cheques should be made payable to the schools involved.
