THE House of Lords yesterday gave welcome backing to proposed changes to bail laws following a campaign by the parents of murdered nurse Jane Clough.

The amendment will allow prosecutors to appeal against bail rulings if the offender poses a risk.

And in our view this seems perfectly reasonable.

The tragic case of Jane Clough, murdered at the age of just 26 by her former partner, has been the catalyst for this change.

Her ex-partner Jonathan Vass was on bail accused of raping her when he stabbed her 71 times.

Her parents Penny and John were in the House of Lords yesterday to witness peers effectively approving “Jane’s Law”.

This was a good decision for justice.

It puts the needs and safety of the victims of crime ahead of the rights of the criminal.

And there is no doubt it will protect victims of crime and the general public.

There is little doubt in our view that Jane Clough would be alive today if the Crown Prosecution Service had had the right to challenge bail decisions in 2010.
