AN OVERGROWN graveyard in Blaenavon is being cleared up next week.
Volunteers will work at St Peter’s Church on March 1 and 2 from 10am till 3pm.
Local residents, young people from the Neon youth club, Communities First and staff from Bron Afon Community Housing will be taking part.
The project is being organised with the family employment initiative which is a European funded project run by BTCV.
BTCV will bring along 20 tonnes of stone to create a ramp inside the new gate to the north side of the graveyard.
This will be used to create a walk from the town to the countryside beyond.
The fence around the church will be repaired and vegetation will be cleared from around the graves.
Claire Dullea, Bron Afon’s community housing officer, said: “Hopefully with the support of local volunteers this can grow to a larger conservation project. Over the two days everyone hopes to make a big difference to the grounds of this well known Blaenavon landmark.”
