MORE than 4,500 waste tyres were found at an illegal site in Newport.

Environmental crime officers visited the site after a tipoff from a member of staff from Environment Agency Wales.

An enforcement notice has been served on the site’s operators to remove the tyres after it failed to have the right licence.

The Agency’s Rhys Hughes said: “Operators who run sites illegally put the environment and human health at risk and undermine legitimate businesses.”

He said the cost of disposing a car tyre is around £1.44 per tyre and anyone who offers to take waste tyres away for less should be treated with suspicion.

The Environment Agency said it was not able to specify the location.

An environmental crime can be reported to Environment Agency Wales on 0800 807060.
