ABERGAVENNY’S very own Elvis and his Memphis Mafia are among the performers at a charity concert in memory of a popular rugby player tonight.

Abergavenny RFC has organised the concert at the town’s Borough Theatre in memory of 21- year-old Lewis Smith who died on January 15 last year.

Mr Smith, from Abergavenny, died shortly after playing for the club’s 2nd XV, The Quins, in an away game at Gwernyfed RFC, near Brecon.

The memorial concert will raise money for Diabetes UK and the British Heart Foundation.

Other acts to feature in the show, compered by Gareth Gibbs, are Synergy Close Harmony Chorus, Talgarth Male Voice Choir, harpist Charlotte Poulter, comedy poet Graham J Evans and folk band Broadside. Jim Aitken, an Abergavenny RFC committee member, who came up with the idea for the concert, said the club hope to install a memorial bench in Bailey Park soon and a tree has also been planted there in Mr Smith’s memory.

There are a few tickets left at a cost of £12.50 or £10 for concessions available from the theatre’s box office on 01873 850805.
