DENNIS Tippins has walked, jogged and cycled the length of the Monmouthshire- Brecon canal to capture iconic images of bridges and waterways.
Mr Tippins, 70, who has lived by the the canal at Pontymoile for 45 years, spent three months taking photographs along a 35-mile stretch of canal from Five Locks at Pontnewydd to Brecon.
His images include bridges with memorable names such as Crown, Skew and Solomon’s, canalside pubs and the canal breach at Gilwern. Mr Tippins takes viewers on a photographic journey through Sebastopol to Goytre Wharf, Govilon, and Gilwern alongside text documenting the history of the canal in a 60minutelong DVD set to music. Entitled The 200th Anniversary Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal 1812 to 2012, the DVD has been endorsed by British Waterways.
“It has been a labour of love,”
explained the retired joiner: “I knew quite a lot about the canal before I started researching its history but learnt much more after meeting local artist Mike Blackmore, whose drawings of how the waterways would have looked in days gone by also feature on the DVD.”
Mr Blackmore visualised how the canal would have looked at Llanfoist Wharf during its heyday and is shown alongside a current photograph by Mr Tippins. The DVD is on sale for £10 at outlets including Abergavenny Bookshop, C & M News, Ponytpool Museum and the information centre in Dock Street, Newport.
