WORK to demolish 1960s-built almshouses in Monmouth began on Thursday.

Bristol Charities, which became the trustee of the 400- year-old William Jones Almshouse charity last year, is demolishing the 19 Cwrt William Jones almshouses off St James’ Square to make way for 24 one-bedroom independent living flats and ten mews homes in a gated development for older people. The almshouse, built for older people, was originally founded in 1616 by Monmouth merchant and founder of the Haberdashers’ School, William Jones. He made Haberdashers’ Livery Company the trustees of the William Jones’s Almshouse Charity which were later rebuilt in 1842 and in 1961.

Bristol Charities chief executive, David Jones, who became its trustee last year, said the current housing falls short of modern needs and the new designs meet the requirements of older people and enable them to live independently.

Former residents have been relocated while the redevelopment by housing developer Lovell takes place and will be offered accommodation in the new development when complete early next year.
